Departed Friends

John Hey

On Sunday 13th of June, John Hey passed away peacefully in the hospital here in Santa Cruz. He was one of the first people to set foot in the Molly Malone about 23 years ago. A great friend with a heart of gold. He loved a drink, a ciggy and the craic!!! He loved to come at Carnival time and join in our Molly Malone parade. He made loads of friends here and was a great man for remembering people, names, jokes, poems, sayings........ask John and he would tell you everything from sports to ladies´fashion!
He was brilliant on the bodhran and the spoons. When he was here he was always helping Des to make a table, fix a seat or change a bulb. He also brought over all the stone wallpaper we have in the bar as we could not find it here. For years he was our Father Christmas at the Molly Malone´s Christmas Party .( I´m sure you will remember him wearing a green Father Christmas suit). He used to grow his beard specially for this occasion and once the party was over, off came the beard...until the next year! In the picture he is with our Swedish friend Ula who used to dress as our Mummy Christmas. After a few years we went back to a red Father Christmas suit as some of our younger guests were getting confused!! We have many fond memories of John. God Bless.
